Energy deregulation creates more competition and allows the consumer to choose their own utility provider. This is similar to the AT&T divestiture in 1984 which included the monopoly of local and long distance services and the break-up of the Bell companies. With energy deregulation, the consumer can now shop for electricity and natural gas rates for maximum savings. Energy deregulation is now active in 35 states with full and partial regulation since some states offer only electricity and/or gas deregulation at the present time. Additional states with full regulation is expected to be approved by the end of 2014. Consumers can contact their local congressional office to expedite the process.
